Watch Over

·

Psalm 121:

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?
     My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber;
     indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
     the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
     the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

This Psalm was one of many Psalms Jews sung as they traveled to Jerusalem for a celebration. The phrase "watch over" appears here five times in eight short verses. This Psalm speaks about our Lord watching over us and protecting us with a protection would have been necessary for this long and difficult journey.

The New Testament uses this same phrase five times, four of which refer to the protection that a shepherd or leader gives to a flock or group (Luke 2:8, Acts 20:28, Hebrews 13:17, and 1 Peter 5:2). Therefore, this may be the Psalm of a shepherd similar to Psalm 23. Our Lord is our Shepherd, Protector, watching over us wherever we go.

How does it feel to know that God "watches over" us like a shepherd "watches over" his sheep? What kind of protection do you need today?
