We were created to create. How does that statement sit with your soul? For some of us, it may induce a self conscious eye roll while for others a quickening of the heart with great anticipation. Either way, we are naturally creative beings.
We create music and art, homes and meals. We blend together colors and arrange pictures on our walls in just the right way. We dance and we play. We arrange flowers and furniture creating spaces of beauty and rest. We create relationships, homes, and the communities in which we live. Creating comes naturally to us.
God our Father is incredibly creative. Genesis 1:1 begins the grand story of creation. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” He then goes on to create all that we see around us with His ultimate creation being humans. Genesis 1:27 reminds us that we are created IN His image. Created beings created in the very image of our Creator. When we connect with this narrative of creativity, not only does something come alive in us, but we reflect back a creative and loving God to the world.
One of the ways I most naturally create is through writing. I use words, often lined up one after another, to create thoughts, feelings, and stories. When I find myself in this creative space, I often feel most alive because I am doing what I was created to do.
Below is a reflective poem that I wrote recently. As you read it, I would challenge you to ask the Holy Spirit to whisper to your heart ways that you uniquely express your creativity. May it encourage you to step into the creativeness that is hidden within all of us, secure in the Father’s love.
Who Am I? New.
I’m a deep thinker, a reflector, an internal processor, slow at times like the dripping of a pour over into a mug that is vast. I am a feeler and a believer and a dreamer. That immeasurable space of ‘what could be’ and’ things to come’ overflowing at times, spilling off the pages of my worn journal and seeping into life.
Life that is not contained, not neat and tidy, something to be picked up and put back again. Because creation is everywhere. Beauty is boundless and my appetite for such ever rising.
Oh to travel and experience and to be and to discover. Oh to create, to put a toe over the line and let beauty flow from deep inside bursting forth as though it was always meant to be. Oh to sing at the top of my lungs from the depth of my heart- to worship, to declare, to feel the words in all of their meaning. Oh to taste and to see and to feel and to listen. The pause between each breath is just as important as the breath itself.
I am made in the image of my Creator. I am crowned with glory- a crown that sparkles with honor and releases me to come alive with purpose and passion. A freeing of my soul that has been bound and broken. Redeemed. That is who I am - I am won back. I am new. I start again and as I do all of my gifts, abilities, and creativity turns passion into compassion. From an inward focus to an outer reaching. A giving of myself to the world in a way that was meant to be all along. A reflection of Jesus.
Psalm 8:3-5 “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him? You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.”
