Why We Are Thankful

·

2 Corinthians 9:15 says, “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”

It is difficult to be thankful when we are in pain, or anxious, or experiencing disappointment. But we can be thankful, whatever our situation, if we have a proper perspective – one that is Christ-centered, that takes us beyond this life with an eternal horizon. David Pao illustrates this Christ-centered focus saying, “Thanksgiving is an act of submission when the performance of such an act is not aimed at coercing God to act but is a way to acknowledge him to be the Lord of all.” No matter the circumstance or situation we find ourselves in, we can be thankful that the Lord loves us and is in charge of every detail for our good.

The apostle Paul encourages us to be thankful to God for his indescribable gift, which is beyond human description, found in the gospel (2 Corinthians 9:15). The connection of gratitude, gift, and grace is made in this verse. This “gift” can be described as God’s saving grace provided through his Son. Our salvation from sin and judgment comes from the hand of a loving God. This is the heart of the good news and great cause for never-ending joy.

Next time you feel like protesting your station in life, engage your mind. Stop and think hard and long with careful reflection about God’s love and grace freely given to us who are undeserving. Preach the gospel, the good news of forgiveness, to yourself continually, for as you do, your hearts will overflow with thanksgiving. So be thankful today and every day because of God’s saving grace through his Son.
