Psalm 55:16-17, 22: “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
We’re given two directives in the above scripture. We are to call to God and cast our cares on Him. We need to call upon Him — not just wallow in self-pity or look to some other false god (distraction, addiction, etc.) for comfort. I suspect that God protects us at times when we are unaware, but He definitely wants us to call upon Him when we are in distress. David even gives us a pattern of seeking and crying out to the Lord three times a day.
Why would we do that? Wouldn’t telling God our particular trouble once be sufficient?
What if the reason we are to continually come to Him is for more than just the issue at hand? What if it is to continually off-load the worries and anxieties of life? What if it is an invitation to rest, to remember who God is, and His promise of provision and care?
We may be really good at laying our burdens at the feet of Jesus, but we’re also really good at picking them back up again. Perhaps doing it daily, even three times a day, will help us remember to leave them there.
C.S. Lewis said, “Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.”
