Before a meal, many begin with an old family prayer, saying, “God is great, and God is good…” He is indeed great in so many ways. The Psalmist says, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom” (Psalms 145:3). 

God alone is great. He defines greatness. No one can ever fully comprehend the full dimensions of his greatness. The Psalmist says his greatness is unsearchable and can’t be fully measured. The exploration of his greatness never reaches an ending with a final defining statement on who God is. This great God is more worthy of our time, attention, and allegiance than any other in the world and therefore he is to be our highest treasure and greatest obsession.

It is wise to remember what John Piper wrote, “It is about the greatness of God, not the significance of man. God made man small and the universe big to say something about himself.”  

Isn’t this great God, who called everything into existence out of nothing, enough to handle any of my problems? Isn’t this great God, who daily sustains the universe, able to maintain stability in my life? Isn’t his great God, who sent his Son to the cross to die for my sins, able to meet the basic needs of little ol’ me?  

What should our response be to these incredible realities? Simply great praise to a God of surpassing greatness is a good place to start. For as C.H. Spurgeon put it, “No chorus is too loud, no orchestra too large, no Psalm too lofty for [the praising] of the Lord of Hosts.”
