Psalm 42:1: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.”
As the world has slowed down from its usual activity, it may give us opportunity to also slow down and give greater attention to the care of our souls. St. Augustine, an early Christian theologian, writes “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You.” Scripture exhorts us to pursue God, and hunger and thirst after Him because only He will bring real satisfaction to our souls (Isaiah 55:1-2).
Take this time of disrupted schedules and re-center your life around God, your Savior. Pursue Him in His Word, delight in Him and He will give you desires that bring glory to Him (Psalm 37:4) and great joy to your heart (Psalm 19:8). I love this prayer by A.W. Tozer. Perhaps it can be your prayer as well?
“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, "Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away." Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long”. Amen.
