Matthew11:28-“Come to me,all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
The fact that Jesus went to the painful odious cross for us shows just how horrific our sin must be. The world is miserable today and terribly broken because of the effects of sin and the need for a Rescuer. Every painful consequence of this harassing virus reveals to us that we are not in control, and that we ultimately do not call the shots but are in desperate need of help. God in Christ has provided that help by sending his Son to die for the forgiveness of our sin. Though more than a symbol, the cross still graphically shows how much Jesus loves us (John 3:16). If he loved you by dying for you on the cross, he can love you in a coronavirus.
God is in control. All that is happening around us is not by accident. Yes, we are experiencing a “hard” providence from God but God’s mission is to rescue people from sin and judgment. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Those who are continually weary and carrying a heavy load such as the crushing pressures of life, crippling worries, loneliness, and a sin-laden conscience are called to bring their hearts and minds to Jesus and place them under his lordship. If we do this, he says he will give us eternal rest.
Only One has ever said and can ever say, “Come to me, and I will give you rest.” Can anyone else say that to you with results? No one else can give you the promise of rest or eternal relief. So don’t delay; come today to Jesus.
