Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Conquering the Promised Land was a pretty scary thought!

God had His people pause just before they were to cross the Jordan River. He asked the people to consider making an agreement with Him – a covenant. God was inviting them to trust Him and obey Him. He, in turn, would provide complete safety from the enemies there. Blessing and prosperity awaited them in Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey.

Every family would receive land, a permanent inheritance for the family. What a great offer from God! If they refused to follow the terms of this agreement (covenant), the results would be disastrous. They would be cursed by God. Blessings and curses – that was their choice. Not hard to figure out. Moses, their respected leader encouraged them to choose rightly – to trust God.

He communicated to the people that God was expecting two qualities from them and implored them to refrain from two behaviors. The two qualities God expected from His people were to be strong and to be courageous. The two behaviors God did not want to see from His people were fear and panic. These were very similar qualities and behaviors that God would soon warn Joshua about after Moses died.

During this crisis, I have tried to focus on those four words. I refuse to be afraid, nor will I panic or be terrified. My trust is in my God. My times are in His Hands (Psalm 31:15). Likewise, I will continue to be strong and courageous in HIS POWER. Not leaning on my ability to face this threat, but leaning on the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in me. During this current crisis, God is asking His people of no less. You can do this, Christian. Here is your verse: “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Phil 4:13) NIV.
