Matthew 7:24-27: “…A wise man who built his house on the rock…a foolish man who built his house on sand.”
What is the foundation upon which you are building? This is the question that must concern our souls. Are we building upon the rock, or are we building upon the sand?
We all have foundations. In Matthew 7, we see the parable of the wise man who built his house upon the rock and the foolish man who built his house upon the sand. There are just two ways to build. We can either build on the solid rock of Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life and on his teachings. Or, we can build on the sand of other religions and ideas or rely on our own abilities. But, we will find that this second option is a dangerous shifting foundation that on the last day will bring total ruin. Verse 27 says, “the rain came down…the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” As the children song ends, “the house on the sand went splat,” or utter devastation. It leaves us with a sober warning: How foolish not to respond to Jesus. What a tragic waste not to build on Christ the solid Rock who can help us weather the violent storms of life and deliver us from final judgment.
The prophet, Isaiah, prophesied about the coming of the Sure and Ultimate Foundation, which is found only in Christ. The one who builds (relies) on him will never be stricken with panic (shaken) (Isaiah 28:16).
J. C. Ryle exhorts us, “[May we] strive so to believe and so to live, so to hear Christ's voice and so to follow Him, that when the flood arises, and the [waves] beat over us, our house [will] stand and not fall.”
